Founder: Prof. M. Fuad KÖPRÜLÜ

Fuad Köprülü was born in İstanbul on December 4,1890. Fuad Köprülü received his formal education at Ayasofya Rushdiyesi and Mercan Idadisi. In 1907, he entered the School of Law of Istanbul University. After three years of study, Fuad Köprülü left this school. Afterwards, he improved his French. From 1910 to 1913, Fuad Köprülü taught lessons of Turkish language and literature at various high schools in Istanbul. Also he wrote poems for the Servet-i Funun magazine. On November 20, 1913, he became university teacher.

Later Fuad Köprülü was appointed as professor of the History of Turkish Literature at Istanbul University. Toward the end of 1913, he published his widely lauded academic article “The Method in Turkish Literary History” (Türk Edebiyatı Tarihinde Usul). He contiuned his research and publications through the years. First Mystics in Turkish Literature (Türk Edebiyatında İlk Mutasavvıflar), in 1919, was a book that focused on two Turkish mystics and folk poets, Ahmed Yesevi and Yunus Emre. History of Turkish Literature, published in 1920, was another book. His publications created e big fame.

In 1924, Fuad Köprülü was appointed dean of the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University. On November 12, 1924, he was appointed director of the Research Institute of Turkology (Türkiyat Araştırmaları Enstitüsü), which was establisted on the orders of Kemal Ataturk which began publishing the Journal of Turkology (Türkiyat Mecmuası). In this term, he published many articles in the Encyclopedia of Islam and the many other information recognitions the journals.

Academic Personality and Principles: His books, articles, essays and poems constitute “canon of Turkish culture and national identity.
