Publishing Principles and Article Writing Rules

Publication Principles

1. As a media organ of the Research Institute of Turkology, Journal of Turkology is a biannually periodical and peer-reviewed publication. Full text of articles is published on http://dergipark.gov.tr/iuturkiyat

2.The articles that are sent JOT should be related Turkish Language and Literature, Turkish History, Turkish Art and any disciplines about Turkology such as sociology, archaeology, art history, linguistic etc. The articles must not be published any other media organs and have an original content. Furthermore, each issue also includes notices of symposiums that have not been published elsewhere, as well as reviews, translations, and book introductions, if approved by the evaluation board. The statement must specify the name, location and date of the symposium. Translated texts should also include the original work which is translated.

3.Language of JOT is Turkish. However, English articles may also be included as long as it does not exceed one third of the issue.

4. The articles which are sent to JOT are examined in terms of compliance with the principles of the journal at the time of publication and the ones that are suitable are sent to three reviewers who are expert on the field. The names of the reviewers are kept confidential and reports are reserved for five years. At least two of the review reports are positive, the article is published. Information regarding publication is given to the reviewer who sent the negative report. The authors make corrections to the opinions and recommendations of the reviewers. The Editorial Board may make changes to the format of the text if necessary. Rejected articles do not return to the author; but a copy is given to him or her if requested.

5.Wholly published issues are sent authors and major libraries, institutions and organizations.

6.Copyright of published articles belong to the Research Institute of Turkology, Istanbul University. Thus, the articles cannot be published other media organ without permission of the Institute. Royalty is not paid to authors. Authors should sign the “Article Publication Contract”.

7.All legal and scientific responsibilities of the articles that are sent to JOT for publishing belong to the authors/writers.

Article Writing Rules

1.Title: Papers should have titles in both Turkish and English. The titles predicate the content of articles ideally and The English title should be the exact translation of Turkish one. The entire title should be written in bold capital letters and should be 11 pt.

2.Author’s Name and Address: In journal automation system, contributors can be seen by director. Therefore, authors’ name and surname, their institutions, and communication information are not included in the article. This practice is crucial for fair evaluation. Personal information is filled completely while signing in journal automation system.

3.Abstract: At the beginning of the article, there should be abstract in both Turkish and English and these abstracts should possess the summary which is at least 150 and at most 250 words long. There should be at least five key words below of abstract. The abstracts should be 9 pt.

4.Article Text: Articles should be written via MS Word, and it should be written in Times New Roman, 10 pt. and 1 line spacing. If special fonts are used for old lettered text, special fonts should be sent with article. Italic letters should be used for emphasizing place. Quotations should be written in italic and with quotation marks. If quotations are longer than five lines, quotations should be written in 1 cm inside from the sides of the line, in block form and 8 pt. In addition to the special cases required by the article or the subject in terms of marking and punctuation, the Turkish Language Association's Imprinting Guide must be taken as basis.

Margin top and bottom: 2,5 cm

Margin left and right: 2 cm

Font: Times New Roman

Font Style: Normal

Font Size: 10 pt.

Footnote size: 8 pt.

Abstract: 9 pt.

Paragraph Spacing: 0

Line Spacing: 1

6.In-article Titles: According to the method, main, intermediate and subtitles can be used based on the digit-letter system. The first letter of each word in the headings should be capitalized.

7.Photos, Plans, Maps and Graphs: The photos, maps and other visual materials should be “.jpg, .tiff or .jpeg” format and they should send with article. These materials should be suitable quality (min. 300 pixels) for printing and they must not be bigger than page size. If there are visuals more than one, each one must be enumerated. (For Example, Picture 1, Map 1, Figure 1etc.) The pictures, maps and other appendixes that are shown in bracket should be add end of the article.

8. Footnote and Bibliography: For footnote, classical and parenthesized footnote systems can be used. In the classic method, footnotes should be numbered under the page. Respectively, the name of the author(s) and the work are written. If there is translator, editor, volume, issue, publisher, publishing place, date and page, these should be noted. The name of the publications should be italic and name of the articles should be written in brackets. Thesis names should be italic and institution of thesis, whether it published or not, academic degree of thesis should be noted in bracket. If there are same references more than one, respectively, author’s surname and ibid should be written. For parenthesized footnote systems, author’s surname, publishing date and page number is written in the bracket.
